Bacterial angular leaf spot of cucumber

A disease caused by the bacterium Pseudomonas syringae pv. lachrymans, manifesting as angular spots on leaves and ulcers on fruits. It affects all aerial plant organs and can lead to the death of seedlings.

The causal agent of the disease belongs to the family Pseudomonadaceae and is a Gram-negative aerobic rod-shaped bacterium. The pathogen is a facultative parasite that infects cotyledons, leaves, stems, petioles, flowers, and fruits of the crop.

A characteristic symptom of leaf infection is brown, oily, angular spots delimited by leaf veins. Under high humidity, bacterial exudate appears on the underside of the spots, and subsequently, the affected tissues dry out and fall out. Small, round, watery ulcers develop on the fruits, leading to deformation and loss of market quality, while on the cotyledons of seedlings, the disease manifests as light brown spots.
