The primary causal agents of bean diseases include Xanthomonas phaseoli pv. phaseoli and Xanthomonas citri pv. fuscans, which cause common bacterial blight, Pseudomonas savastanoi pv. phaseolicola, which induces halo blight, and Curtobacterium flaccumfaciens pv. flaccumfaciens, which causes bacterial wilt. The diseases manifest as water-soaked spots, necroses, chlorotic halos, and systemic infection of the vascular system, leading to defoliation and seed contamination.

Resistance to halo blight is determined by Pse-1–Pse-6 loci and a number of QTLs, with the pathogen-plant interaction often following the "gene-for-gene" principle. Regarding common bacterial blight, resistance is predominantly polygenic and quantitative in nature and is associated with QTLs such as SU91, SAP6, and BC420, which requires the use of breeding approaches, including the introgression of loci from closely related species, such as Phaseolus acutifolius.
