Sclerotinia stem rot of rapeseed

Brassica napus var. napus

A fungal disease of rapeseed caused by the pathogen Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, manifesting as damage to stems and pods after flowering. It leads to premature ripening, plant lodging, and the formation of black sclerotia within the tissues.

In the reference 170 varieties crop Rapeseed, where this is mentioned in the description.

Plant infection occurs primarily via ascospores that settle on flower petals. As infected petals fall onto leaves and stems, they become primary infection foci. At the sites of infection, watery, weeping spots appear, which become covered with a white, cottony mycelial growth.

Typical symptoms include discoloration and softening of the stem, causing the plants to snap and lodge. In dry conditions, the mycelial growth may disappear, leaving the tissues with a dry and bleached appearance. Sclerotia—the resting structures of the fungus—form inside the damaged stems.

Complete monogenic resistance to Sclerotinia stem rot is absent in rapeseed cultivars. Breeding is focused on creating quantitative field resistance by accumulating polygenic complexes; however, there are currently no commercially available cultivars with identified resistance genes to this pathogen.
