White Mold of Bean

Phaseolus vulgaris L.

A fungal disease of bean caused by the pathogen Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, manifesting as a white cottony growth and rot of stems and pods.

In the reference 13 varieties crop Common bean, where this is mentioned in the description.

The causal agent of bean sclerotinia rot is the ascomycete fungus Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, also known by the synonymous name Whetzelinia sclerotiorum. The disease develops actively under high humidity conditions, affecting the above-ground organs of the plant, including stems and pods.

Key symptoms of the infection include water-soaking and browning of tissues, which become covered with a dense white mycelial growth. A diagnostic sign is the formation of black, tuber-like sclerotia, up to 10 mm in diameter, inside the tissues or on the surface, which serve as the primary structures for survival of the infection in the soil.
