Melons are affected by polyphagous whitefly species, among which the greenhouse whitefly and the tobacco whitefly are the most significant. The latter is a quarantine pest with high ecological plasticity, successfully developing on cucurbit crops.
Damage manifests as the sucking of cell sap, which causes chlorosis and general plant stunting. The honeydew secreted by larvae serves as a nutrient medium for sooty molds that reduce photosynthesis. Furthermore, whiteflies act as vectors for viral pathogens, including the cucurbit yellow stunting disorder virus, which affects muskmelon.
Specific resistance genes to the whitefly have not yet been identified in melon breeding. Research on the crop's genetic material is primarily focused on resistance to other pests and diseases; therefore, breeding varieties with protection against this pest remains a complex challenge.
