The whitefly is a dangerous pest that damages plants by sucking phloem sap and transmitting viruses. Varietal resistance is provided by physical and chemical characteristics of plant tissues that reduce their attractiveness to the insect.

The whitefly appears as a small insect, with colonies concentrating on the underside of young leaves.
