Cutworms and armyworms

Noctuidae

Cutworms and armyworms are a family of polyphagous pests whose larvae gnaw at roots or damage the aerial parts of plants. Resistance to them is not race-specific and is more often determined by the physiological and biochemical properties of a variety or the presence of incorporated Bt genes.

Mentioned in descriptions 89 varieties reference book.

Cutworms and armyworms pose a serious threat as polyphagous pests. Subterranean species live in the soil and damage stems at the root collar, leading to plant death, while aerial species damage leaves, buds, and fruits. Damaged crops become more susceptible to secondary infections.

Unlike diseases, there is no standard system of race-specific resistance for cutworms and armyworms. Plant resistance to these insects is more often due to non-specific physiological and biochemical properties of the variety, which influence the plant's attractiveness to the pest and the intensity of larval feeding.

The only example of targeted genetic resistance is Bt hybrids, in which a bacterial toxin gene has been incorporated into the genome. In standard variety descriptions, resistance codes are not used, so claims of resistance are usually formulated as increased tolerance or reduced damage.
