The Colorado potato beetle is a specialized phytophage of Solanaceae capable of reducing potato yields by 50–60%. Completely immune varieties do not exist; breeding efforts are aimed at developing forms with relative resistance.
Mentioned in descriptions 54 varieties reference book.
The Colorado potato beetle is a specialized phytophage feeding on the aerial parts of Solanaceous crops. Adults and larvae consume leaves and stems, leading to metabolic disruption, weakening of the crop, and a loss of up to 60% of the yield. The species is characterized by high adaptability and the ability to rapidly develop resistance to insecticides.
Mechanisms of relative resistance in varieties include antixenosis, i.e., morphological features such as pubescence or leaf toughness that hinder feeding and oviposition. Antibiosis is also utilized, based on the presence of specific substances in tissues, such as alpha-tomatine, which negatively affect the pest's development and fecundity. An important factor is tolerance, expressed as the ability to rapidly regenerate green mass after damage.
Resistance assessment of varieties does not rely on standardized scales, as complete genetic immunity is absent. In scientific practice and variety trials, resistance indices are used based on criteria such as the number of overwintered individuals per 100 plants, the percentage of surviving larvae, and the degree of foliage damage scored on a scale. The resistance of a specific variety is only part of the protection system, requiring monitoring and evaluation within the framework of regional trials.
Selection based on the description text, not official resistance ratings: such data is not available in registers. Mention indicates that the trait is discussed in the variety's sources; see the variety's profile for details on what is specifically stated.
