The variety was obtained in the late 19th century through selection from seedlings of the Early Rose variety. The growing season ranges from 120 to 150 days. Tubers are large, elongated-oval or cylindrical in shape, with characteristic thick russeted skin of reddish-brown color and white mealy flesh.
The variety is demanding of growing conditions, responsive to irrigation, and is characterized by moderately high yield. In scientific literature, the name is often mentioned in the context of creating transgenic lines to increase resistance to the Colorado potato beetle and viruses, as the classic variety is susceptible to a number of diseases.
