NewLeaf Superior is a transgenic potato line developed from the mid-season Superior variety. The modification consists of the insertion of a gene from the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis, which provides the plant with built-in resistance to damage by the Colorado potato beetle.
The plant retains the characteristics of the original Superior variety, including resistance to scab and suitability for potato chip processing. Research has shown that transgenic plants may possess greater growth vigor and exceed the standard clone in yield under low nitrogen fertilization rates.
The nutritional value of the modified version is practically identical to the non-transgenic analogue. The line was developed in the 1990s as a commercial solution to the problem of pest control.
