Cotton Whitefly

Gossypium hirsutum L.

The main pest of cotton is the tobacco whitefly Bemisia tabaci, which damages the plant by directly sucking sap and acts as a vector for dangerous viral diseases.

In the reference 9 varieties crop Upland cotton, where this is mentioned in the description.

On cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.), the pest is the tobacco whitefly of the species Bemisia tabaci, primarily its biotype B. The pest causes direct negative impact by sucking sap from plant tissues, which leads to growth retardation and general weakening of the crop.

Indirect damage is caused by the secretion of honeydew by larvae, on which sooty mold develops, hindering normal leaf photosynthesis. In addition, the whitefly is a vector of geminiviruses, which cause symptoms of leaf curling, yellowing, and mosaic in cotton.

Specific resistance genes to this pest in cotton breeding currently do not have international nomenclature. Variety resistance is assessed based on morpho-anatomical features, in particular, the nature of stem and leaf pubescence, which affects the attractiveness of the plant to the pest.
