Cultivation
Petunia Juss.
A vegetative propagation method necessary to preserve the varietal characteristics of trailing and double-flowered petunia groups, which are not transmitted through seeds.
In the reference 21 varieties crop Petunia, where this is mentioned in the description.
Taking cuttings of petunias is the primary method for reproducing vegetative varieties and hybrids, as their unique traits are not preserved during seed propagation. This method allows for the production of an exact copy of the mother plant, which is critical for groups that do not produce viable seeds or exhibit significant trait segregation.
The technique requires making a cut 1–2 mm below the basal node while removing a portion of the leaves to reduce transpiration. Double-flowered varieties are more difficult to propagate during the seedling stage due to limited shoot growth, whereas trailing groups possess a high branching capacity, allowing for regular cuttings.
Petunia cuttings exhibit a high survival rate, exceeding 95% under optimal conditions. A mixture of peat and perlite in a 1:1 ratio is considered the most suitable rooting substrate. Unlike many ornamental crops, this method serves as the primary tool for the commercial production of professional petunia series.
