Brassica napus var. napus
A complex of seedling pathologies in rapeseed caused by soil-borne fungi Olpidium brassicae, Pythium spp., and Rhizoctonia spp. It is characterized by darkening, thinning, and softening of the hypocotyl, leading to lodging and death of seedlings.
In the reference 24 varieties crop Rapeseed, where this is mentioned in the description.
The disease affects rapeseed exclusively at the seedling stage. Necrotic lesions form in the root collar zone and on the hypocotyl, and the tissues soften and darken. This leads to stem thinning, lodging, and subsequent death of the plant. Secondary symptoms include yellowing of cotyledons, loss of turgor, and dieback of the root system, which causes stand thinning.
The pathogens of the disease are hemisaprophytic fungi Olpidium brassicae, as well as species of the genera Pythium and Rhizoctonia. It is important to distinguish this symptom complex from phoma stem canker, caused by Leptosphaeria maculans, as the latter is a distinct disease requiring different methods of resistance evaluation, including the use of specific genes, such as RLM7, which are not applied in the context of blackleg control.
