Brassica oleracea L. (White Cabbage Group)

A complex disease of cabbage seedlings and adult plants caused by soil-borne phytopathogens Olpidium brassicae, Pythium debaryanum, and Rhizoctonia solani under conditions of high humidity.

The pathogens infect cabbage at various stages of development. Olpidium brassicae and Pythium debaryanum cause wateriness, browning, and rotting of the basal part of the stem in seedlings up to the two-to-three true leaf stage, which leads to lodging and death of the seedlings. Rhizoctonia solani more frequently affects older transplants, causing darkening and drying of the stem, which triggers stunted growth and poor survival rates upon transplanting.

Under field conditions with high humidity, the disease manifests as blackening, thinning, and curvature of the root neck in adult plants, which turn yellow and may become covered with a white cobweb-like mycelium. A characteristic symptom is the weakening of the root system, causing infected plants to be easily pulled from the soil. Specific resistance genes to this pathogen complex in cabbage have not been identified to date, and breeding work is not being conducted due to a lack of data on races and pathotypes of the pathogens.
