The gerbera flower stalk is a leafless basal scape, the length and strength of which are key morphological traits in assessing the quality of cultivars and hybrids.

Flower stalk length is measured from the base of the leaf rosette to the inflorescence and varies from compact forms for pot culture to tall varieties for cut flowers, reaching 60–70 cm. For commercial cut flower production, straight, resilient, and strong stalks measuring 40–50 cm or more are highly valued.

Flower stalk development is highly dependent on growing conditions: insufficient light leads to undesirable stem elongation, which reduces market quality. Due to their fragility and tendency to bend, flower stalks require the use of support structures in greenhouses and careful handling during transport.

Flower stalk length is a quantitative breeding trait with high heritability. There is a correlation between stem length and vase life: inflorescences with shorter flower stalks generally demonstrate greater longevity after cutting.
