Glycine max (L.) Merr.
A genetically determined trait that defines the growth habit of the main soybean stem and the yield formation strategy through resource allocation between vegetative growth and pod set.

The growth habit of soybean is classified into determinant, where stem growth ceases at the onset of flowering due to the transformation of the terminal bud into an inflorescence; indeterminate, characterized by the continued growth of nodes simultaneously with pod formation; and semi-determinate, with growth continuing for two weeks after the onset of flowering.
This trait is qualitative and is determined by morphological analysis of the apical meristem in accordance with UPOV or RTG/80 guidelines. The trait significantly influences crop management: indeterminate forms are more plastic under stress, whereas determinate ones provide a more compact habit, which is important for mechanized harvesting.
The choice of growth habit dictates crop management strategy, including sowing dates and stand density control, as tall indeterminate varieties are more prone to lodging. At the same time, the height of the lowest pod remains a critical parameter for harvesting, depending on both the genetically determined growth type and cultivation conditions.
