Potato determinacy

Determinacy in potatoes is determined by the site of flower shoot initiation. In determinate varieties, growth of the main stem is limited by a terminal inflorescence, after which vegetative growth ceases, which typically results in a more compact habit and earlier plant maturity.

Indeterminate varieties have flower shoots in the axils of lateral buds, which allows the apical bud to continue growing for an extended period. This is characteristic of varieties with a long growing season, which require precise timing of desiccation for timely tuber maturation.

Growth type influences agronomic practices: determinate varieties yield more uniformly and require fewer resources for canopy formation. Indeterminate forms may require more careful hilling to ensure full stolon development and provide a more extended growing period.
