Fusarium Wilt of Red Cabbage

Brassica oleracea L. (Red Cabbage Group)

A vascular disease of cabbage caused by the fungus Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. conglutinans, leading to blockage of the vascular system and plant wilting. It is characterized by unilateral yellowing of leaves and browning of the vascular ring in cross-sections.

In the reference 35 varieties crop Red cabbage, where this is mentioned in the description.

The causal agent of Fusarium wilt in red cabbage is the soil-borne fungus Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. conglutinans. Several physiological races are identified in the pathology, among which race 1 and race 2 are the most studied and aggressive, capable of infecting specialized differential cultivars.

Key external signs of the disease include loss of turgor, head asymmetry, and leaf yellowing, which often appears locally between the veins. A transverse cross-section of the stem or petioles reveals characteristic browning of the vascular ring caused by the blockage of the vascular system by the pathogen's mycelium, which prevents normal water supply.

Breeding for resistance to this disease relies on the use of genetic types A and B, with commercial varieties often labeled as resistant to a specific race of the pathogen. Infection leads to significant deformations, stunted head development, or complete plant death.
