A collective name for a group of fungal leaf spots caused by Bipolaris maydis (southern corn leaf blight) and Exserohilum turcicum (northern corn leaf blight). The disease affects vegetative organs and ears, causing necrotic spots of various shapes and sizes.

The causal agent of southern corn leaf blight is Bipolaris maydis, which includes races 0, T, and C. The most aggressive race T is pathogenic to corn with CMS-T, causing necrosis on leaves, stalks, and ears. The southern type is characterized by small reddish-brown spindle-shaped or rectangular spots with a dark border.

Northern corn leaf blight, caused by Exserohilum turcicum, manifests as large cigar-shaped spots up to 20 cm long, featuring a grayish center and an olive-black layer of sporulation. Resistance to northern corn leaf blight is controlled by Ht-type genes, such as Ht1, Ht2, and Ht3, which is reflected in the breeding designations of hybrids.
