Variety traits

Bean maturity group

Phaseolus vulgaris L.

A characteristic of the bean vegetation period duration from full emergence to harvest maturity, measured in days.

In the reference 807 varieties crop Common bean, where this is mentioned in the description.

Maturity groups of common beans are classified by the number of days from seedling emergence to maturation: early-maturing varieties reach maturity in up to 85 days, mid-season varieties in 86–95 days, and late-maturing varieties require over 95–100 days. In intensive vegetable production, ultra-early forms are distinguished with a vegetation period of 50–60 days.

The choice of maturity group depends on the harvest objective: for snap beans (technical maturity) or for grain (biological maturity). Bush forms generally ripen more uniformly and quickly than pole beans. When choosing a variety, a balance is considered between yield potential, which is often higher in late-maturing varieties, and the climatic risks of the region.
