The FAO index is calculated by comparing a hybrid with standard references and takes into account the sum of active temperatures required for the crop to reach full maturity. A difference of 10 FAO units under comparable conditions is equivalent to a 1–2 day difference in maturity or a 1–2% difference in grain moisture at harvest.
The selection of a maturity group is a tool for managing yield potential and economic costs. Late-maturing hybrids have a higher productivity potential but require a long warm period. When cultivating for grain, it is critical that the FAO index corresponds to the regional climate; otherwise, high grain moisture at harvest will necessitate significant energy expenditure for drying.
