Maize lodging is the loss of vertical plant orientation, manifested as stalk breakage or root leaning, which significantly hinders mechanized harvesting and leads to yield losses.

Two types of lodging are distinguished for maize: stalk lodging, associated with stem breakage at the leaf node level, and root lodging, caused by a weak root system. In variety trials, resistance to these types is assessed in points or as a percentage of lodged plants, with data re-recorded after 5–10 days.

The main causes of lodging are the genetic characteristics of the hybrid combined with agronomic errors, such as high plant density and unbalanced nutrition, where an excess of nitrogen in the absence of potassium and phosphorus weakens the stalk. Root system damage by pests, root rots, and adverse weather conditions also significantly increase the risk of crop instability.
