Rapeseed Stand Density

Brassica napus L.

A critical parameter determining winter hardiness, lodging resistance, and crop yield. Optimizing density aims to develop a robust root system and prevent excessive elevation of the growing point.

In the reference 10 varieties crop Rapeseed, where this is mentioned in the description.

For winter rapeseed, the optimal autumn stand density is 60–80 (up to 100) thousand plants per ha, and at harvest time — 40–70 thousand plants per ha. Excessive density promotes stem elongation and elevates the growing point above the soil surface, which significantly reduces plant frost resistance.

Rapeseed possesses a high compensatory capacity, allowing for increased branching in sparse stands. Density requirements depend on the type of planting material: modern hybrids, especially mid- and late-maturing ones, require fewer plants per unit area compared to open-pollinated varieties due to intensive branching.

Excessive crop density creates an unfavorable microclimate with high humidity, increasing the risk of fungal diseases and lodging. Managing stand density is a key agronomic practice to ensure proper root collar development and to prepare the plant for successful overwintering.
