Density requirements depend on the type of planting material: modern hybrids, especially mid- and late-maturing ones, require fewer plants per unit area compared to open-pollinated varieties due to intensive branching.
Excessive crop density creates an unfavorable microclimate with high humidity, increasing the risk of fungal diseases and lodging. Managing stand density is a key agronomic practice to ensure proper root collar development and to prepare the plant for successful overwintering.
