Planting density — soft wheat

Triticum aestivum L.

The number of soft wheat plants per hectare, which is a key element of the yield structure. In variety testing, this indicator requires normalization to assess the genetic potential of the cultivar.

In the reference 22 varieties crop Bread wheat, where this is mentioned in the description.

The planting density of soft wheat directly determines the stand density, plant development, and the final number of productive spikes. In state variety testing, maintaining uniform density for cultivars within the same maturity group is a mandatory condition for leveling the influence of growing space conditions.

Deviations from optimal values lead to agronomic problems: overcrowding triggers competition for resources and increases the risk of disease, while thinning promotes weed infestation. Soft wheat is capable of partially compensating for insufficient density through tillering, the intensity of which depends on the depth of the tillering node.
