Cultivation

Container cultivation of Acer palmatum Thunb.

Acer palmatum Thunb.

Growing Acer palmatum in containers requires strict adherence to moisture balance due to its shallow root system and sensitivity to waterlogging. Controlling container size and regular repotting help to manage tree growth and protect it from unfavorable climate conditions.

In the reference 13 varieties crop Japanese maple, where this is mentioned in the description.

The Japanese maple has a shallow, fibrous root system that is extremely sensitive to waterlogging, which triggers the development of root rot. Planting requires a well-draining peat-based substrate with the addition of perlite, gravel, or bark up to 20% of the volume, at a pH level of 5.5–6.5. The container volume must be proportional to the root ball and should not exceed it by more than twice the size, as excess soil not occupied by roots retains too much moisture.

Due to the limited volume of substrate, the plant requires frequent watering, which during hot periods can be performed daily. Repotting is carried out every one to two years into a slightly larger pot. Pruning is kept to a minimum, removing crossing branches exclusively during the dormant period from November to February to prevent heavy sap flow. The container method allows for effective management of tree size and ensures its mobility for protection against wind and frost.
