Cultivation
Cucurbita pepo L.
A method of growing zucchini in a limited volume of substrate, requiring the selection of bush varieties and adherence to strict irrigation and nutrition standards.
In the reference 35 varieties crop Field pumpkin, where this is mentioned in the description.
Only compact bush forms are suitable for container cultivation of zucchini, as vining varieties require an excessive volume of nutrients. The optimal container volume for one plant ranges from 18–20 to 40–60 liters with a minimum depth of 35–40 cm, which is necessary to maintain a stable water regime and the development of a robust photosynthetic apparatus.
Under conditions of limited substrate volume, drainage and aeration are critical, provided by drainage holes and a 5–7 cm layer of expanded clay or pebbles. Due to high transpiration intensity, zucchini requires frequent watering, and the depletion of soil nutrient reserves is compensated by regular fertilization, with special attention given to preventing calcium deficiency to avoid blossom-end rot.
Zucchini is sensitive to root system damage, characteristic of all cucurbits; therefore, with this cultivation technique, direct seeding into the container or the use of careful seedling transplanting is preferred. The plant requires sufficient space to accommodate large leaves, which will inevitably extend beyond the boundaries of the chosen container.
