Cultivating umbrella bamboo in containers requires wide pots with good drainage, as the plant is prone to root rot in waterlogged conditions yet is extremely sensitive to moisture deficits. A reliable indicator of insufficient watering is the characteristic curling of leaves into tubes. Due to the limited volume of the substrate, the plant's growth rate slows as it fills the pot; therefore, dividing the root ball every 2–3 years is recommended to maintain vitality.
