Hydrangea quercifolia W. Bartram
Growing oak-leaf hydrangea in containers requires the use of well-drained substrates and moisture control to prevent root rots. Due to the large size of the species, the selection of dwarf cultivars and canopy shaping through pinching are recommended.
In the reference 7 varieties crop Oakleaf hydrangea, where this is mentioned in the description.
The root system of oak-leaf hydrangea is extremely sensitive to waterlogging, which increases the risk of Phytophthora root rot. In nursery practice, substrates based on pine bark and sand in ratios ranging from 3:1 to 6:1 are used to prevent decay. It is important to avoid transplanting into excessively large containers until the current pot volume is fully colonized by the root system.
To obtain a compact and bushy plant form, shoot pinching is applied by removing the top two nodes when seedlings are in the small pot phase, followed by pruning of emerging lateral shoots. Unlike other hydrangea species, soil acidity does not affect the flower color of this species, which simplifies agrotechnics.
Given the large habit of standard forms, dwarf cultivars such as 'Pee Wee', 'Sikes Dwarf', or 'Munchkin' are preferred for container cultivation. Despite the species' natural drought tolerance in open ground, it is necessary to maintain stable substrate moisture without water stagnation in the limited volume of a container.
