Pelargoniums in the limited volume of a container require substrates that prevent waterlogging of the root ball, as stagnant water triggers the development of blackleg and root rot. The plants are light-demanding and, in case of insufficient light, lose their compact habit and flowering intensity. An important shaping technique is pinching the shoots, which limits the natural stretching of the plant.
The mineral nutrition regimen should be balanced with an emphasis on low nitrogen content, as an excess of it stimulates excessive vegetative growth to the detriment of generative processes. The specifics of using different groups of Pelargonium include drought-tolerant zonal hybrids for open planters, trailing ivy-leaf forms for hanging baskets, and regal pelargoniums, which require a specific temperature dormancy period for bud initiation.
