Pelargonium is a thermophilic crop that is grown exclusively as an annual in outdoor conditions. Plants are transplanted to their permanent location only after consistently warm weather has set in and there is no further risk of spring frosts. At the end of the season, to preserve the specimens, they must be lifted and moved into frost-free areas, as the crop lacks winter hardiness in open soil.
For successful vegetation, Pelargonium requires light, well-drained soils, as there is a high risk of root system damage in heavy and waterlogged areas. The crop is photophilous and tolerates direct sunlight; however, regal varieties require protection from strong wind and precipitation. To maintain the aesthetic appearance and air circulation of the bushes in open ground, a spacing of approximately 20 centimeters between plants should be maintained, and regular pinching of shoots should be performed.
