When evaluating double flowering in Pelargonium, a quantitative count of the petals is applied: a single flower has 5 petals, semi-double has from 5 to 10, and double has more than 10. This trait is inherited and regulated by genetic mechanisms of floral organ development, which is key when planning hybridization.
A high degree of double flowering affects the agronomic practices and ornamental value of the crop. The dense structure of double inflorescences provides poor aeration and retains moisture, which increases the risk of plants being affected by fungal diseases, such as Botrytis cinerea, especially with excessive watering or high air humidity.
