Red fescue is a valuable perennial lowland grass of the winter type, used primarily for pasture establishment due to its high resistance to trampling and its ability to form a dense sod.

The crop is valued for its longevity, maintaining productivity in a sward for up to 7–10 years, and good regrowth after grazing. Despite its clear specialization for pasture, red fescue in pure stands is capable of producing up to 60–70 c/ha of hay, performing on par with meadow fescue or Kentucky bluegrass.

The plant is characterized by high adaptability to low-fertility sandy loam and sandy soils, where other forage grasses show reduced productivity. In the year of sowing, fescue grows slowly, reaching maximum yield only in the 2nd to 3rd year of life. Breeding of this crop clearly divides varieties into forage and turf types, which differ in phytomass and vegetation intensity.
