Variety traits
Festuca rubra L.
An agronomic indicator of the plant's rate of development during the initial stage of ontogenesis, which determines the crop's ability for rapid turf formation and its competitiveness in grass mixtures.
In the reference 24 varieties crop Red fescue, where this is mentioned in the description.
Red fescue is characterized by a slow growth rate in its first year of life. Its seedlings are small in size, which requires a significant amount of time to establish a full-fledged grass stand. Subspecies of the crop, such as rubra, litoralis, and commutata, show differences in development intensity, but in general, they surpass sheep's fescue and hard fescue in this indicator.
In practice, vigor is assessed through seedling parameters under laboratory conditions or by visual analysis of above-ground biomass and turf density in the field. High initial development energy correlates directly with successful rooting, while low vigor makes it necessary to use fast-growing grasses, such as ryegrass, in lawn mixtures.
The vigor of rhizomes in Festuca rubra ssp. rubra determines the ability of the grass stand to recover from damage and fill in voids. In seed production, the intensity of development during critical phases is one of the key factors affecting the final productivity of the crops.
