Perennial ryegrass is a highly productive grass crop with intensive regrowth, intended for multiple grazing cycles and the creation of nutritious grass mixtures.

Perennial ryegrass is characterized by rapid development and the ability to form a dense sward as early as the year of sowing. Due to its high regrowth intensity, the crop can withstand up to 3–5 grazings per growing season; however, because of the specific taste of pure stands, it is more often used in mixtures with legumes or other grass species.
Forage quality of this crop is critically dependent on the vegetation stage: delayed harvesting leads to a sharp decline in protein content, metabolizable energy, and overall digestibility. At the same time, ryegrass is a relatively short-lived plant, maintaining productivity in the stand for no more than 3–5 years, and it requires a mild climate due to insufficient winter hardiness in harsh conditions.
