Raphanus sativus L. var. oleiformis Pers.
Oilseed radish is a high-protein fodder crop with a green mass yield of up to 700 c/ha, capable of multiple cuts per season and providing livestock with feed during the autumn period.
In the reference 35 varieties crop Oil radish, where this is mentioned in the description.
The green mass of the crop is highly nutritious, approaching that of legumes: its dry matter contains between 12 and 26% crude protein, as well as significant amounts of sugars, minerals, and vitamins. Unlike forage root crops, only the vegetative part of the oilseed radish is utilized, as this species does not form root vegetables.
Due to the presence of essential oils that can irritate the digestive tract of animals, it is not recommended to feed the crop in its pure form. The optimal method of use is ensiling, haylage production, or creating mixtures with cereal crops such as oats, barley, or sudangrass.
The biological characteristics of the plant allow for 2–3 cuts per season due to active regeneration after mowing at the budding stage. Its cold tolerance and rapid development cycle (35–50 days) make oilseed radish indispensable for addressing shortages of high-protein fodder in the autumn period, when the vegetation of most other forage crops has concluded.
