Faba beans are a high-protein legume crop valued for their high lysine and protein content. They are used as a valuable component of compound feeds and as a silage crop, requiring specific preparation due to the presence of antinutritional factors.

Faba bean seeds contain from 25 to 35% crude protein, making them an important source of protein for balancing rations. The green mass of the crop is characterized by a high yield of 30–60 t/ha, exceeding maize in protein concentration by 1.5 times, and is frequently used for silage in mixed cropping systems.

A specific feature of grain utilization is the presence of tannins, lectins, vicine, convicine, and trypsin inhibitors. To neutralize these antinutritional factors and increase feed digestibility, technological processing such as extrusion, toasting, or steaming is mandatory.

In addition to its direct feed value, the crop serves as an important element of sustainable agriculture, fixing atmospheric nitrogen and improving soil fertility for subsequent crops in the rotation.
