Root rots of Calibrachoa

Calibrachoa Cerv.

A complex of root system diseases in Calibrachoa caused by soilborne pathogens Thielaviopsis basicola, Pythium species, Phytophthora, and Ceratobasidium. The disease often manifests as chlorosis of the aerial parts, mimicking iron deficiency, and there are no known genes for genetic resistance.

The most specific and frequently diagnosed pathogen of black root rot in Calibrachoa is the fungus Thielaviopsis basicola, which causes characteristic root blackening. Significant damage is also caused by oomycetes of the genera Pythium and Phytophthora, which cause softening and decay of tissues, and Fusarium oxysporum is often found in the rhizosphere of affected plants, though its pathogenic role is frequently secondary.

The symptomatology of the disease is often latent, manifesting as leaf chlorosis, stunted growth, and plant wilting, which complicates diagnosis without laboratory analysis. Genetic resistance to root rots is absent in existing commercial Calibrachoa varieties, and screenings confirm the susceptibility of all studied samples to these pathogens.
