Viral pepper leaf curl is caused by members of the begomovirus group (Geminiviridae), such as Pepper leaf curl virus, Pepper yellow leaf curl virus, and Chilli leaf curl virus. The vector of the pathogens is the tobacco whitefly. The disease manifests as upward curling of the leaves, puckering, chlorosis, shortening of internodes, and pronounced plant stunting, which leads to a critical reduction in yield.
Non-infectious leaf curl occurs due to temperature stress, calcium deficiency, or damage by pests, such as aphids and mites. Unlike fruit crops, the fungal pathogen Taphrina deformans does not occur on peppers. Breeding for resistance to viral leaf curl is challenging and is aimed at identifying natural sources of immunity, such as in the Bhut Jolokia cultivar.
