Among the viral causes of leaf curl are infections by begomoviruses, such as Tomato leaf curl New Delhi virus (ToLCNDV), which is transmitted by whiteflies and causes upward leaf curling, growth stunting, and fruit deformation. This symptom is also characteristic of Squash leaf curl virus (SLCV), which induces leaf cupping and shoot bending, and Cucumber green mottle mosaic virus (CGMMV), which manifests as blistering and vein clearing.

Non-infectious leaf deformation and curling are often physiological responses of the plant to sharp temperature fluctuations, errors during seedling transplanting, or imbalances in mineral nutrition. Since the term does not describe a specific disease, resistance in cucumber breeding is considered exclusively in relation to specific viruses rather than to 'leaf curl' per se.
