A viral disease of tomatoes caused by members of the genus Begomovirus, primarily the Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV), transmitted by whiteflies.

The primary causative agent is the Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV), also known as Begomovirus coheni. The vector of infection is the tobacco or greenhouse whitefly (Bemisia tabaci). Depending on the stage of infection, plants exhibit significant stunting, shortened internodes, chlorosis, upward or downward leaf curling, as well as massive flower drop without the formation of new fruit sets.
In breeding for viral resistance, resistance genes Ty-1, Ty-2, Ty-3, Ty-4, ty-5, and Ty-6 are used, which have been introgressed from wild species Solanum chilense, S. peruvianum, and S. habrochaites. Resistance in varieties is often quantitative and depends on the combination of several genes. At the molecular level, the disease is classified by strains and isolates, such as TYLCV-IL or TYLCV-Mld, based on the analysis of nucleotide sequences.
