Melon leaf curl is a symptomatic manifestation of a number of viral infections of the Geminiviridae family transmitted by the whitefly Bemisia tabaci. The disease causes leaf blade deformation, chlorosis, stunted growth, and yield reduction.

The causative agents of leaf curl in melons are the ToLCNDV, CuLCrV, SLCV, and WCLaV viruses. Characteristic signs of infection include leaf curling and crinkling, mosaic patterns or vein yellowing, as well as significant plant developmental delay, shortening of internodes, and flower drop followed by fruit deformation.

Breeding for resistance to these viruses relies on the use of molecular markers to monitor quantitative traits. Specifically, for resistance to the ToLCNDV virus, a major locus on chromosome 11 has been identified with additional regions on chromosomes 2 and 12, with the trait most often inherited recessively. Regarding the CuLCrV virus, a recessive resistance gene culcrv has been described.
