Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench

Sorghum tillering is measured as the average number of stalks per plant. In agronomic studies, a distinction is made between total tillering and productive tillering, which accounts only for those shoots that have formed mature panicles. For typical tillering varieties, having 2 to 4 stalks is considered normal, with average values in variety trials often ranging from 2.7 to 3.5 stalks.

The trait exhibits high plasticity depending on cultivation conditions. As plant density increases, tillering decreases, which promotes more uniform ripening and simplifies mechanical harvesting. For crops used in green forage systems, high tillering is considered an advantage, as it ensures vigorous regrowth after mowing.
