The dry matter content in sorghum is a critical factor in determining the harvest stage. For grain sorghum, this indicator in a mature state usually exceeds 85–88%, which is necessary for long-term and safe storage. In silage production, an optimal dry matter level ensures proper fermentation of the mass, preventing nutrient losses caused by excessive moisture.
The assessment of dry matter yield per hectare is considered the most objective criterion for the productivity of sorghum hybrids, allowing for the normalization of differences in plant tissue hydration. When analyzing the biochemical composition quality of sorghum grain, the content of components such as starch is standardized based on dry matter, where its share can reach 74%.
