Sorghum tolerance is defined as the crop's ability to maintain viability and productivity under saline and drought conditions. The trait is assessed via laboratory germination rates under stress or yield stability indices in contrasting agroclimatic conditions.

When assessing salt tolerance, laboratory seed germination methods in sodium chloride solutions are applied, as well as field measurements of soil extract electrical conductivity. Grain sorghum often shows higher resistance to osmotic stress than sweet sorghum or sudangrass. A comprehensive assessment of a variety's adaptability requires accounting for genetic flexibility, determined by the results of multi-year trials in conditions varying in moisture and salt regimes.
