Variety traits
Reversion virus
In crop production, the term refers to two distinct concepts: a decorative trait characterized by an increased number of petals in flowers, or a dangerous viral disease of blackcurrants that causes sterility.
Mentioned in descriptions 16 231 varieties reference book.
In ornamental horticulture, double flowering is a varietal characteristic expressed by an increased number of petals in a flower to enhance aesthetic appeal. In the case of blackcurrants, double flowering, or reversion, manifests as a viral disease in which flowers are deformed into purple outgrowths, leaves lose their shape, and the plant becomes sterile.
This trait is assessed as a qualitative phenotypic indicator. In ornamental crops, double flowering is recorded during variety trials either visually or by using scoring systems for ornamental quality. Regarding currants, double flowering is considered a critical symptom, the presence of which requires phytosanitary culling of infected specimens.
Resistance of a variety to pathological reversion is determined by the genetic ability to withstand the virus and its vector, the currant bud mite. When choosing planting material for a garden, preference should be given to varieties with proven genetic resistance, as there are no numerical units of measurement for this trait.
Selection based on the description text, not official resistance ratings: such data is not available in registers. Mention indicates that the trait is discussed in the variety's sources; see the variety's profile for details on what is specifically stated.
