Frost Resistance — Physocarpus opulifolius

Physocarpus opulifolius is characterized by high natural winter hardiness, which allows it to be grown in temperate climates without special covering. Mature plants are resistant to extreme winter temperatures down to -34°C, making the species suitable for widespread use in urban landscaping and hedges.

During severe winters, partial freezing of the young shoot tips may occur, although this is not critical damage for the crop. The plant possesses good regenerative capacity, and sanitary pruning of damaged areas in spring further stimulates active bushiness.

The evaluation of the crop's frost resistance is based on phenological observations of tissue condition after overwintering. For young seedlings in the first year after planting or when exposed to temperatures below -35°C, mulching of the root system is recommended to prevent the risk of shoot desiccation.
