Variety description

The Gelesq variety, known under the trade name Red Esquire, is a compact or dwarf shrub 1.0–1.8 m in height with a crown up to 1.5–2.0 m in width. Shoots are flexible, pendulous, and reddish in hue. Leaves are alternate, glossy, and dark purple, almost black in color.

Flowering is abundant, occurring in June. Flowers are light pink or white, collected in corymbose inflorescences. The plant is photophilous; with insufficient light, the leaf coloration dulls. The variety is winter hardy (USDA zone 4a), disease resistant, tolerates pruning well, and is easily propagated by cuttings.
