The Black Night variety of American origin is a medium-sized shrub with a height of 1.5–1.8 m and a width of 1.2–1.5 m. The plant is distinguished by dark purple, almost black foliage and flowering in June, during which pinkish inflorescences are formed. The fruits are decorative reddish-brown capsules.

Economic traits of the American variety include high drought tolerance, winter hardiness, and low requirements for soil conditions. In Polish selection, the variety is also known as a decorative shrub; however, detailed morphological characteristics for it are not specified in open reference sources.
