The primary causal agent of powdery mildew on Verbena hybrida is the obligate biotroph Podosphaera xanthii. The infection manifests as a white powdery coating on leaves, stems, and occasionally flowers. Initial symptoms are often localized on the underside of the leaf blade.

Characteristic signs of infestation include puckering of young leaves, as well as the appearance of chlorosis or purple discoloration on the upper side of the leaf. During intensive development of the pathogen, photosynthetic processes are disrupted, which leads to growth retardation, shoot desiccation, and plant death.
