Plant height of Verbena x hybrida

For Verbena x hybrida, plant height is divided into three main groups: dwarf and compact (15–30 cm), medium-tall (30–45 cm), and tall, including 'mammoth' forms (45–60 cm). Actual height depends on the nature of the shoots, which can be erect or prostrate, while in trailing forms this parameter is supplemented by shoot length, reaching 50–60 cm.

Measurement of the indicator is carried out during the mass flowering phase from the root collar to the highest point of the inflorescences or the shoot tip. The trait is subject to strong variability under the influence of external factors: lack of light leads to etiolation and increased height, while excessive nitrogen nutrition stimulates vegetative growth.

Plant height determines agronomic decisions: low-growing varieties are used in borders and containers, while tall ones require larger feeding areas to prevent overcrowding and disease. Pinching of shoots is often used to maintain the varietal habit parameters.
